New series of penny coins coming out

I think this was announced in September but I just stumbled over it: the US Mint will issue, starting next February, a new penny every 3 months for a year (4 total). They are to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln penny and are themed from Lincoln's life. I don't think J. W. Booth will be featured on any of them. I'll have to get a proof set of these.

I think these are pretty cool but I'm one of the few here who like the 50 quarter program and have all the sets.

Well no, it's zinc, with roughly the same value but pennies won't burn nearly so well. Also you can't store stuff in old pennies. On the other hand, I've never seen anyone with a series of proof boxes and Walmart won't accept boxes as change.

They're still offering the proofs in 95% copper, right? (that was in the bill two years ago).

Maybe so but I just looked at a COA for a 2007 Mint Proof Set with the silver quarters and the penny was 2.5% copper and 97.5% zinc. Maybe they will issue these in copper.

They already announced the 95% copper proof to match the original composition.

They look nice, but the Mint has become coin seniorage whores. They should keep the collectibles to the non-circulating currency (like the proofs), and leave the circulating coins alone.

Kinda stupid, IMO to waste millions in redesign and production of a coin that is basically worthless. Fedgov should have s-canned the penny a long time ago.

Not to go OT, I'm in Vegas right now and got my first Presidential dollar coin in change. Compared to the monstrosities of the Sac and Susie B dollar coins, this is a nice looking coin! They should be a bit bigger in diameter, still too close to quarter size, for my liking. They should be in between a quarter and a half dollar

Not all pennies are worthless, there are some out there worth more than a 1 oz gold Eagle.

I see this a lot now.

We used to have a set of "counterfeit" coins from our silver days. I.E. money looked like the old silver certificates and the coins were exact knock-offs.

Now every coin has multiple versions, the quarter especially - we went from the great seal of the united states on the back, to...a cowboy? and there are 50 different designs...they moved the date so it isn't on the front anymore...

same with bank notes...we used to have only one version...in the last 10 years there have been 4 or 5 sets of bank notes to "combat counterfeit"...

I think the real version is to confuse people on the true nature of coinage
